Norman Rockwell Museum

We took a trip to the Berkshires that included a stop at the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst, and the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. Both museums were full of interesting and inspiring images and stories. At the Eric Carle, an exhibit of Garth Williams' process work and final illustrations for Charlotte's Web was my favorite, at Norman Rockwell, a chance to sketch from his large original paintings was a great way to appreciate the compositions.

Below is a sketch I did of Norman Rockwell's "Football Hero" and photos (not taken by me) of the museum.

  1. Great post, great sketch! I love both of these illustrators, and thanks to this post, have put them on my "to-do" list for 2013! Thank you for sharing!

    1. Thanks, Mit! The Eric Carle is small but has a lot of single images by lots of different illustrators. The Norman Rockwell is very nice, his large-scale paintings are fantastic to look at up close, and there are about 3 small galleries full of his work, plus the people there are very knowledgeable. They also have Rockwell's last (huge!) studio on site (I think he had dozens of them in his life).
I'd recommend both museums if you are in the area or going there! They are about an hour or so apart.

    1. I'd wanted to get to both museums for a while and finally got a chance in a trip out to Western MA. Both museums are fairly small, but have some great stuff in them. Eric Carle had a nice show of Garth Williams' drawings and process work for Charlotte's web, which was great.
